A basic tenet of the Kentucky Women’s Network is our belief that “all people are entitled to live without fear for their own safety or the safety of others. That safety must be secured by both protection and prevention.” Sadly, women are often victims of very unsafe conditions: according to various national sources, for example, we know that one in three women in the U.S. will be the victim of domestic violence in their lifetime. Fortunately, there are people and organizations committed to combating domestic, and we will hear from three of them at our April 15 meeting.
First, Councilwoman Liz Sheehan (and Fayette Branch member) and Stephanie Theakston, LFUCG domestic and sexual violence prevention coordinator, will set the stage by discussing the Domestic and Sexual Violence Prevention Coalition, the Its Time Campaign, and related community services.
Then we’ll learn about GreenHouse17, an organization committed to ending intimate partner abuse. Its specially trained advocates are available 24/7 to help people harmed by domestic violence. Darlene Thomas, executive director, will describe GreenHouse17’s crisis intervention and stabilization services, which range from safety planning and emergency shelter to court advocacy and supervised visitation for children. We’ll also learn about the organization’s beautiful 40-acre farm and the role it plays in their work.
Let’s keep our “do good” momentum going.
